The Hilux Surf is the perfect size for most folks who have an adventurous spirit and an active lifestyle. It ticks many of the boxes you'd want your JDM SUV to have; things like reliability, efficiency, and all-weather capability. Utilizing one of Toyota's best-designed engines, the 1KT-ZE turbodiesel, this 1994 Surf can run forever and get you where you need to go! Sporting new Falken rubber, EGR rain guards, and an OEM rear spoiler, this example is finished in Toyota's classic Black (204.) The body is in good shape other than a few spots where the clear coat has begun to fade, and there a few light dings, scuffs, chips due to normal use.

As this model is a Limited trim level Surf, it comes with more interior features and options than a base model. Power locks, windows, and mirrors all function as they should and an adjustable column allow drivers of all sizes to get comfy behind the wheel. The driving position is commanding and allows for the pilot to see above traffic with ease. The A/C and heat work as they should and the system is fully automatic which reduces the need to play with the dials while driving. Like US 4Runners, the rear window rolls down to aide ventilation and a set of rain guards reduce the buffeting noise from the wind. The door cards and headliner are in good shape and an Addzest radio upgrade filters some sweet tunes into the cockpit. The front occupants actually have two cup holders that pull out from the center stack, which was rare for Japanese trucks of this era. The seats are incredibly comfortable on long drives and are upholstered in a gray and blue combo. They are soft to the touch and devoid of any major rips or stains other than a minor hole in the driver's side bolster. Privacy tint helps to obscure prying eyes from the rear seats and cargo area and has the additional benefit of keeping interior temps down and reducing the age on the interior plastics. The glove box contains the original owner's manuals, which is always a nice find. That's not to say that the interior is perfect, as the dash has a crack and small dent, and the carpets have some light staining to note as well.

The engine is heralded by Toyota die-hards as perhaps the best ever fashioned in a truck of theirs. The 3.0L four-banger may lack in refinement but makes up for its bulletproof efficiency. Benefitting from a fresh, diesel specific, oil and filter service the four-cylinder turns over with a twist of the key. With only 138K verified miles, this baby is only now just getting broken in. Funneling power through an automatic transmission, the 'ute accelerates up to highway speeds with ease. Low-end grunt is impressive, and the transmission shifts without any issues. The selective transfer case has an option for low-speed 4WD function for when the going gets tough and the 5 new all-terrain Falken tires we installed churn out plenty of grip. The suspension is compliant and the steering is light, and the Hilux is just as good Overlanding as it is in the muck.

This Hilux earns high marks for its reputation and inexpensive inception price. For the true off-road enthusiast, this is a great buy and drives better than SUVs half its age! A Japanese Classic for sure, you won't want to miss out on this one.
