The Japanese preferred a much more nuanced approach to designing the modern van. Utilizing premium materials, flexible storage, and cutting edge technology, vans were used to showcase the latest and greatest in automotive engineering. This 1994 Nissan Homy Royal definitely lives up to the name, providing premium appointments for all who enjoy its friendly confines. Sans the normal scuffs and dings associated with daily use, Black over Gray two-tone (1K9) shows well, noting only a few deeper scratches of the front lower cladding and bonnet panel. The large, slab-sided bodywork creates a sleek profile, dressed up with some dark privacy tint and refinished silver alloy wheels.

Since it is a van, the interior is what the Royal is all about. The tan cloth interior has been well preserved over the years, free of any notable stains or tears. Each of the captain's chairs has particularly good bolstering and offers comfort on long drives. Upfront is very roomy with exceptionally comfortable bucket seats, center console storage, and controls for all of the accessories in the back. All of the creature comforts are powered such as the windows, cruise control, driver's seat, and the locks. All of which function as they should. Automatic climate control front and center on the dashboard, with a separate switch to control the rear air, which does blow cold. Additional ventilation comes from one of two sunroofs, a manually operated front unit and a powered panoramic rear one. The rear unit is nearly the size of the roof and retracts back (although noisily) to reveal the open sky. The headliner is in good condition without any notables rips, tears or sagging. One of the coolest things about the Homy is the versatile seating options. The middle row is made up of two Captain's chairs that are adjustable forward, back, can be laid flat, or swivel 180 degrees. The rear 60/40 split-bench seat will also lay flat or can be folded and flipped up behind the middle row. If you're looking for more storage and don't need the 3rd row you could pull the four 14mm bolts and with a little muscle take it out opening up 68" worth of usable space from the rear hatch to the back of the middle row. Unfortunately the rear sunroof is currently inoperable, however, it makes a great skylight for road trips or a starry night. Once you set up camp there are full 360-degree wrap around curtains for privacy.

The drivetrain may not excite the average sports car enthusiast, but it is efficient, reliable, and easy to find parts for. Power comes from the 3 liter V6 (VG30E), a Nissan stalwart, which means this van drives more akin to a car than a truck. The smooth, compact single-cam V6 fires right up and settles into a consistent, confident idle. Acceleration from the rear wheels is constant, and the automatic transmission shifts confidently up to highway speeds. With the long wheelbase, the suspension does a good job of mitigating body roll, and grip comes four freshly installed all-season tires. Brakes feel reassured, and the seven-seat people hauler comes to a fairly quick stop when full brake pressure is applied. At only 65K verified miles, this low mileage power plant is only getting broken in, and it has received an oil and filter service to keep it happy for another 5000 kilometers.

Packed with value, a Japanese family van is not only unique but dare we say cool. The flexible seating options, easy to maintain motor, and comfortable ride, making this a true Japanese Classic.
