We feel the Hilux Surf is the pinnacle of performance and reliability in the midsize SUV segment. This 1994 is a special truck, sporting a new coat of Venetian Red (H2Q) paint and a spicy optional Recaro interior. Aside from a few light imperfections, the body is in good nick and this stellar ute is set off by black refinished OEM alloys, a factory spare swing arm, and a stylish rear spoiler. Utilizing one of Toyota's most legendary turbodiesel powerplants, this gutty and tough rig is fresh off a recent service and touts a mere 105k verified and documented miles on the ticker. Capable, collectible, and cool, these Surf's make for decent daily drivers, surefooted winter warriors, and torquey trail trucks, alike.

The cabin is spacious and logically laid out. All the switchgear is at hand, and easy to use. The driver benefits from a slate of electric equipment, including power locks, windows, and electric mirrors. These all work in typical Toyota fashion and a standard tilt-adjustable steering column allows the driver to find the most comfortable driving position. The highlight of the cabin is the rare and desirable Recaro upholstery and seats. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are supportive and aggressively bolstered so that you and your passenger aren't sloshing about the cabin when out and about wheeling through the back forty. The outward visibility is decent that's to the tall ride height and skinny A-pillars. We did want to note that the dash does have some cracks in front of the gauge cluster, which is a common problem with these Surfs. It is tough to see from the cabin as the expensive leather and wood Nardi steering wheel is directly in the line of sight. Other upgrades include a Pioneer radio, but the volume button is nonfunctional so we would recommend a replacement. On the positive side, the door cards, headliner, and carpets have resisted major abuse over the years and are in fine shape. Even the factory owners manuals are included in the sale, which the buyer will surely enjoy!

Under the hood, the nearly bulletproof 1KZ-TE provides all the propulsion. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L churns to life care of two new 12v batteries. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter ensure seamless operation, and one of our trained techs has replaced all three serpentine belts. We didn't stop there as we attended to the weary old valve cover and replaced it with a brand new one so that the 3.0L stays topped up on oil. To ensure the accessories stay powered a new alternator was chucked in, too! If you have a road trip planned, we have performed a coolant flush so that the four-banger stays running at the proper operating temps. While the driveline and body on frame chassis are strong points of these N130s, one of the most common failure points is the ECU. The next owner will take some solace knowing that the ECU has been professionally rebuilt and carries a lifetime transferrable warranty. The 1KZ is now running tip-top and it is linked to a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox. Geared for highway use and also peppy around town, the driver may select 2WD or 4WD through a selective transfer case. It's easy to operate and when 4WD is engaged, it's awfully tough to stop this thing from moving forward! We did rehab the driveline a touch, and the aforementioned T-case receives a new front driveshaft output seal and a full fluid flush. The suspension boasts loads of ground clearance and is predictable for an SUV. It can handle large and small pavement imperfections with confidence, and the power steering is light, allowing the Hilux to be easily parked. The brakes feel tidy and capable and we have wrapped black refined OEM alloys in new oversized Falken all-terrain rubber. The new tires perfectly match the aesthetic, reduce road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
