As the years go on, we have found that the second-generation Hilux Surf has aged gracefully. Compared to later generations, this platform is more nimble and punchy thanks to its lighter curb weight and smaller exterior dimensions. It’s also a highly efficient SUV compared to the American version, which came standard with a thirsty gasoline 3.0L V6. Fresh off a recent service, this terrific turbodiesel Toyota is offered with a mere 124k verified and documented miles on the ticker. Finished in a fresh coat of Terra (4Z0), this Surf is set off by 16″ aftermarket wheels, an OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM rear window applique, OEM spoiler, and OEM rainguards. Aside from a few tiny blemishes, the body is in good shape, and this turn-key truck is ready to rock out on an immediate road trip! Interior Overview

The cabin is simple, but includes all the electric amenities and features to make daily use a walk in the park. It’s also in above-average shape compared to most Surfs of this vintage. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal seating position. Not forgetting about those riding in the back, the rear seat backs are 4-way reclining, a feature that was left out on the equivalent year 4Runner. Unlike many N130s, the dashboard lacks the typical cracks! The center stack includes a simple-to-use climate system that spouts cool A/C or piping hot heat depending on your needs. Below, a Kenwood touchscreen radio upgrade pipes in the tunes and adds a modern aesthetic to the interior. Power windows, locks, and mirrors all work like a charm if you plan to use this truck as a daily commuter. For tailgaters, the split clamshell hatch is ideal for a makeshift seat and the electric glass powers down to supplement airflow. If you have lots of cargo to transport, the rear seats also tumble forward and create a flat loading floor to accommodate more of your gear. The dark blue cloth seats are in above-average shape and were covered in Japan by a set of previously installed seat covers. The door cards and headliner are in good shape, and the carpets have resisted major wear and tear over the years. Mechanical Overview

Under the skin, this rough and tumble truck rides on a true body-on-frame platform. It can withstand tons of abuse, as can the powerplant, the 1KZ-TE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L chugs to life courtesy of two new 12V batteries. A new fuel filter and engine air filter were installed as part of our tune-up, and we changed out the thermostat and flushed the coolant, which won’t need to be done for another four years. One of our trained techs went to town bolstering the powertrain by replacing the weary old valve cover gasket and resealing the transmission pan. A transmission fluid service was then performed, and the auto shifts just as it should. The 1K provides tons of twist, and this midsize SUV accelerates impressively well. New front axles were installed while on the lift to make sure the power gets to the ground. The driver can toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. A low-range selection is also on hand. The suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse, and the rear sway bar links were replaced for the VA state safety inspection. The brakes feel confident, and the power steering is direct and easy to articulate courtesy of a rebuilt power steering pump. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four new 32″ Falken tires. Freshly aligned with new inner and outer tie rods, they will last for tens of thousands of miles to come; they also look mean and quell road noise. If you want a rig that you can turn the key and enjoy, this is it, and we promise you’ll look good doing it!
