The Toyota Hilux built its reputation of being tough as nails well before the 5th generation rolled around. Being a staple in their lineup for over 20 years before our 1993 rolled off the showroom floor, and still is to this day. Initially designed as a truck with a cab, eventually, it progressed to the full-sized SUV and never looked back. Our SSR-G Surf was the top of the line model and it looks the part. The Dark Blue Pearl (8E3) paint really compliments the aggressive styling of the Surf. The paint has a good luster to it and is free of any chips or peeling. The clear coat does have some surface scratches around and some spots of touch up paint, but nothing too uncommon to see with a vehicle of this age. It did have the “Surf” graphics running down the side which was removed at some point leaving a faint outline if you catch the light just right. The stock body has been kept up with well, free of any notable dents or dings you would expect out of a big SUV. With right at 60K verified miles the overall condition is above par for most vehicles half it’s age.

The Recaro interior package is the big standout of the SSR-G trim level and looks beautiful inside the cabin. The seats are supportive and well-bolstered and provide plenty of adjustment to get the perfect seating position. Not only are the seats a nice upgrade but they’ve been kept in great condition, which is a rare find on these Recaro interior models. The headliner and carpet look good and are free of any stains, however, the carpeting on the passenger side does have a small spot of excessive wear. The Hilux embroidered floor mats really jazz up the interior though. The rear cargo area is very nice and looks barely used showing now stains, rips, or tears. The Surf lives up to the beachy name by having not only the four power windows but a functioning sunroof and a powered rear window. Of course for those more dreary days, the original Toyota rain visors are present along with fully functioning heat and A/C. All around this spacious cabin makes for a great place to spend an afternoon road trip with the family.

Mechanically this one is a little bit different from most of the Surf’s we’ve imported. This one has the same heart as the USDM 4Runner which makes it a breeze to find parts. The 3VZ-E 3.0L gas motor was used for ages so you’ll have no problem finding a good local mechanic that can work on it and source any parts you may need. The best part is that it’s mated to a proper 5-speed manual. Finding a manual, 4WD, SUV/truck in this day in age is nearly an impossible feat, let alone with mileage like this. These are notorious for being indestructible, so 60K is only the break-in period. Since we got our hands on the Surf we've gone over it mechanically and made sure that it's ready to start it's latest chapter. The brutish V6 fires up quickly and the suspension does great job of sorting out all the bumps in the road. The steering is surprisingly light and easy to articulate, while the brakes are more than capable of slowing this beast down. With its legendary history and cult following the Hilux really is the ultimate SUV. Whether you're looking to start a trail rig project, or simply in search of something reliable to get you to work regardless of the weather, the Surf has your back.
