Ideal as a unique daily driver, weekend campsite crusader, or fun family hauler, this Japanese Classic is the epitome of old-school cool!

Exterior Overview

Have you taken a look at a brand new Land Cruiser recently? As you can likely tell, much inspiration was drawn from iconic Landys of yore, such as this 1993 70 Series. The boxy angular styling is universally loved, as is the durable 1KZ-TE turbo diesel engine providing propulsion. Proving that beauty can be more than skin deep, this well-optioned Prado includes a rare rear locking differential and surefooted 4WD. Set off in Persian Blue over Super White, this rig is set off by OEM rainguards, refinished 16″ wheels, LED tail lamps, and some aggressive privacy tint. Aside from a few light ding, chips, and scuffs the paint is in good shape and this truck is fresh off a recent service. Bolstered by a new timing belt and water pump service, this body-on-frame beast is offered with a mere 150k verified and documented miles on the clock. Ideal as a unique daily driver, weekend campsite crusader, or fun family hauler, this Japanese Classic is the epitome of old-school cool!

Interior Overview

The cabin is incredibly spacious and was cared for in a prior life in Japan. Upgrades include a USDM Pioneer radio with Bluetooth hands-free integration and media streaming. The other standout is the Altezza Designo wood grain steering wheel that adds a dash of contrast to the cabin. The driver can find the ideal during position than to a tilt-adjustable steering column and electric lumbar support. Power windows, locks, and mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion making daily use more enjoyable. For the winter ahead, the heat is primed and ready to keep you toasty. Unlike early versions of this model, this ’96 actually includes air conditioning, which works like a charm. If natural ventilation is preferred the rear windows pop out and a large sunroof can be retracted to provide a breeze. The seats are in good nick and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear bench can slide forward to accommodate more cargo and the seatbacks fold down, too. The headroom and shoulder room are abundant no matter where you sit. The headliner is in good shape and the carpets and door cards have withstood major abuse over the last 30 years. Aside from the typical dash cracks we see in most of these J78 models, the cabin is in good shape overall and we think the new owner will surely agree.

Mechanical Overview

Body on frame and built to last the J78 is an enduring design. The platform can take loads of abuse and just keeps coming back for more. The same can be said for the 1KZ-TE engine that powers this truck. Fresh off an oil and filter service it churns to life care of a new 12v battery. To save the new American owners some time, money, and stress, one of our trained techs has replaced the timing belt and water pump. A coolant flush was taken care of while we were performing the service, and the timing belt will be good for another ten years and 100,000 kilometers. The 3.0L is linked to an automatic gearbox that shifts properly and is geared for city and highway use. The selectable transfer case allows the pilot to maximize acceleration and performance utilizing RWD, but for loose surfaces like sand and snow, 4WD can be engaged. Best of all the hubs can be locked electrically, as can the rear differential, and low range is on standby. It’s civil on pavement, and while not refined per se, it doesn’t beat you up at all. The long wheelbase distributes bumps nicely and all the shocks were replaced for state inspection as were the lower control arm bushings. A brand-new steering stabilizer and a fresh alignment allow this thing to track straight as an arrow and it slows down quickly for a vehicle of this age. The wheels are wrapped in brand new 33″ Falken all-terrain rubber. They look aggressive, and most importantly, will provide tens of thousands of miles of year-round grip for a long while to come. Turn key and ready to roll this top-spec Prado is a killer-looking truck that can get down and nasty off-road with the best of them!
