Many automotive minds believe the standard-bearer for the 1990's luxury sedan was the Toyota Celsior or Lexus LS400 as it was known here stateside. Touted for its bulletproof mechanicals, exceptional interior fit and finish, and not to mention its low cost of ownership. This 1992 Celsior exemplifies these traits and is offered with a shockingly low 37K verified miles. Finished is a classic Silver Taupe Metallic (923) two-tone, the body is in good shape other than some minor clear coat fading on the leading edge of the front bumper along with some minor scuffs and dings associated with normal use. Sporting a rare gray leather interior and boasting several recent maintenance items, this Celsior is a turn-key option for a VIP build or fantastic daily driver.

The sumptuous interior of the Celsior is thoughtful and spacious. The front two occupants have tons of shoulder, legroom, and headspace for those who love to stretch out. The rear bench can seat an additional three people comfortably. Highly uncommon in Japan, the seats are upholstered with gray leather, which has been well cared for over the years. It complements the black colored dash, which is devoid of any major cracks or distortion. This doesn't come as much of a surprise seeing as they even thought to include the factory books and OEM plush carpet mats with the sale. Power options are aplenty including windows, locks, mirrors and tilt column, which area standard. The driver's seat is electric, and the pilot also benefits from cruise control, which was uncommon at the time of the car's production. A trick backlit gauge cluster works as it should, as does the OEM audio and climate control system. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are in above average shape, and the trunk carpeting is still in place.

The heartbeat of the Celsior is a stellar 4.0L 1UZ-FE V8. Known for its lack of vibration, bulletproof design, and widely available repair parts, this engine is one of the best ever built. Benefitting from a fresh oil service and newly installed 12V battery, the eight-cylinder turns over and fires immediately. Acceleration is seamless, and the Celsior never seems to need any additional power. The automatic transmission sends power rearward, and shifts are effortless and silky. The suspension has received a bit of a refresh in the form of new inner and outer tie rods and a set of bellows boots. Large and small road imperfections are almost entirely isolated from the cabin, and the ride feels like you're driving a sofa on wheels. The brakes are sure-footed and the power-assisted steering is light and effortless. New all-season rubber has been mounted and balanced at all four corners, giving the Celsior the maximum amount of traction even in less than ideal situations.

A Japanese Classic by definition, the Celsior is a perfect substitute for US LS400 with twice the miles, that retails for similar money. Chocked full of convenient features, and showcasing an overengineered drivetrain, this Celsior deserves to be enjoyed for another 28 years.
