1991 Pajero Turbo Diesel
The Mitsubishi Pajero may just be the best kept 4WD secret to ever come out of Japan. Why, you may ask? This robust, reliable, rugged SUV may not spark immediate thoughts of being an off road adventure super star, however it's whats underneath that counts. The Pajero was designed with the Dakar rally in mind and the results don't lie, winning the rally 12 times! From the advanced 4WD system, which allows the driver to select multiple combinations on the fly (up to 60 mph), to the well engineered suspension the unassuming exterior is hiding a superior performing off road machine. This particular 1991 example checks all the boxes and then some! Having only 46k original miles and powered by the rugged 4D56 turbo diesel engine combined with Mitsubishi's bullet proof manual transmission it's hard not to love this SUV. The exterior is understated, and in excellent condition showing only minor imperfections. The exterior is finished in a rather classy Majorca Blue Metallic/Silver (X56) two tone. The exterior has been left all original with the exception of a small brush guard protecting the front grill and a set of yellow Cibie fog lights which function properly. The OEM chrome side mirrors are in great condition along with the optional rain guards. The front bumper has a few scuffs on each corner which are visible in the photos and the rear bumper has a scuff on the left side along with a dent in the chrome. Otherwise, the exterior is in wonderful condition with lustrous paint and a clean and straight body.
The interior makes the rugged underpinnings even more unassuming with it's luxurious trimmings. The only hint to it's roots inside is an assortment of gauges (Altimeter, Inclinometer, Compass/Thermometer) to accompany the main binnacle which shows 4WD selections, and shock settings as well. Inside you'll find high end cloth seating, a massive rear sunroof which works properly, fold away third row seats, and plush carpeting to make you feel cozy even off road. As you would expect from a 46k mile vehicle the interior is far above average condition. The seats are excellent showing only minor wear and no rips, tears, or major stains. The headliner and carpet are also in excellent condition. The door panels have very little wear as well and the factory sticker is even intact on the drivers door. This comfortable and spacious interior will make you feel at home in the dessert, on the trails, or at your local grocery store. The a/c and heat function well, and occupants can expect to ride in comfort.
Getting down to the nuts and bolts of the Pajero, it's powered by Mitsubishi's famous turbo diesel 4 cylinder 4D56, likely the most reliable engine Mitsubishi has ever produced. The engine is bolted to a 5 speed manual transmission which are also bullet proof and over built. It shift smooth, and happily runs through the gears. The "Super Select" 4WD system was quite advance in 1991 featuring on the fly select-ability between 2WD, 4WD High, 4WD High + Locked Center Differential, and 4WD Low +Locked Center Differential. All of these options can be selected at speeds up to 62 MPH. The steering and suspension all feel good, and this behemoth cruises over road imperfections without batting an eye. A fresh oil service, and Virginia state safety inspection puts an end cap on the purchasing experience, and ensures your JDM import is ready and safe for miles of open road.
