An 80 series Land Cruiser is akin to a Calistoga wagon. Cavernous, capable, rugged, and reliable, these trucks came to represent Toyota's golden era of Sports Utility production. This 1990 is equipped with torquey and efficient straight six diesel powerplant, factory triple lockers, and a feature-packed interior, making it an enthusiasts dream. At only 82K verified miles, the Darkish Blue Gray (183) paint is complemented by a safari-style white roof, indicative of this vehicle's off-roading prowess. Sans light clear coat fading on the tailgate, and of course a few normal scuffs and dings associated with daily driving, the body is straight and free of major blemishes. Five new 33" oversized all-terrain tires have been installed, contrasting off the soft and simple exterior lines of this Land Cruiser, which sports some rare OEM rainguards and running boards to boot

The interior is in equally nice condition as the exterior and what you would expect from a vehicle with low miles like these. The seats are trimmed in gray and blue OEM Alcantara, which is but luxurious and sporty. This material gives off a high-end suede-like finish, but also provides plenty of grip on the trails. The bolstering is decent, and they don't get cold like leather or hot under the strong summer sun. The dash is in excellent condition and shows no major damage that the 80 series Land Cruisers are so prone to. The door panels and headliner show very minimal wear, and the factory radio/cd player and speakers are still present. Factory-installed additional gauges by the sunroof controls include a Compass and Altimeter so you can always find your way back home. The seats are in great condition and have very little wear. Both front occupants benefit from heated seats and an OEM icebox and cooler combo. The carpets are also excellent and show no major staining or rips. In the back you'll find plenty of cargo space for camping gear, or a run to the grocery store. The 30/70 split tailgate even provides an excellent bench for tailgating, and shade from the sun. The A/C functions as it should, and the interior feels cavernous due to the large pane sunroof atop the roof. It tilts and retracts as it should, providing premium ventilation if desired.

Mechanically is where this particular HDJ81 really shines! Factory equipped with a triple (electronically) locking differentials and a straight-six 1HD-T Turbo diesel engine this Land Cruiser is begging for some off road action. The engine starts up quickly and idles well, and has benefitted from an oil and filter service. The turbo sounds fantastic and helps the vehicle accelerate up to speeds on the highway and provides plenty of torque for any off-road situation. All of the differential locks are working properly, along with both high and low 4WD functions. The automatic transmission shifts well, and the big SUV is much more fuel-efficient than its gasoline counterpart. The OEM adjustable suspensions feel good, and the heavy hauler bounds over large road imperfections. The brakes confidently stop the 4x4, although they aren't as sharp as say a Supra.

The Landcruiser diesel was never sold here in the US, but it's available as a daily driven Japanese Classic. Outfitted with the best 4x4 package, and in outstanding condition for its vintage, don't let this one pass you by.
