The Hilux Surf is unstoppable, and Toyotas formula for building these rugged trucks has become legendary. Nowadays, you'd be hard-pressed to find a manual transmission SUV like this 1990 example. Offered with an incredibly low 64K verified miles, and finished in a timeless Blue Gray Metallic (179) the body is in good shape other than a few minor door dings. The paint shows quite well for its age with only a few typical stone chips. The trademark Hilux Surf graphics down the side are incredibly period correct and have held up right well, it's not uncommon for these to come in all cracked and faded. While these are already known for their offroad prowess, a few extra bits have been added and not just for show. The giant polished Aiba Works brush guard does a great job of protecting the front end, and frankly just looks mean. The polished 5 spoke wheels look great wrapped in 31" Falken offroad rubber. It's not really a proper SUV without an aggressive tire setup.

The simple, yet straight forward cabin is refreshing compared to new vehicles with their dizzying array of screens and buttons. This Hilux has a spacious cabin, with a few surprising power amenities you might not expect from such a capable truck. Power accessories include the mirrors, locks, a one-touch driver window, and there is a decent sounding aftermarket Addzest head unit. While the aftermarket head unit isn't the most useful thing here stateside it surely beats nothing, and because it already has an aftermarket harness adapter you can easily swap it out for something more current. The front buckets have aggressive bolstering and adjustable thigh support. The material, a textured cloth, is in good shape and devoid of any major rips stains of tears. The backbench is upholstered in the same material and this look in a truck of all things is really slick. While originally equipped with optional sunroof it has been sealed shut to ensure there's no water intrusion. It does, however, offer a ton of natural light to the cabin so things don't begin to feel claustrophobic. And for nice days the four-door windows roll down, but these also sport the trick roll down rear window for a bit of extra circulation. For those days when it's simply too hot for the windows and you need to switch to A/C the Hilux has you covered. Unlike many JDM cars of this era, you actually get two cupholders behind the wood grain veneer.

Utilizing the same 3VZ-E 3 liter V6 that was offered stateside means that maintenance is a breeze. Unlike the diesel options that were never offered here, you won't have to go overseas to find your routine maintenance items which are great. You could actually have this serviced at your local Toyota dealership if you wanted to. The peppy V6 fires right up, but with so few miles that comes as little surprise. While it doesn't offer the same level of torque that the diesels do, it has no problem getting up to speed. Having a proper 3 pedal setup is a rarity these days, and not just in the truck/SUV market. The clutch is easy in traffic and has no issues with sending the power to the ground. The suspension does great at sorting out all the bumps, and the steering is light and easy to articulate. Naturally, there is some additional road noise from the larger off-road tires, but nothing you wouldn't already expect. The brakes also feel strong, and the midsize SUV comes to a stop without issue. As with all of our vehicles, our trained technicians have thoroughly inspected this Surf and brought all of the maintenance up to date. Aside from the 5 new Falkens we also threw in a new air filter, replaced the front pads and rotors, along with a new distributor cap and wires. The capable, unique, and reliable SUV is a timeless design. It's over-engineered drivetrain, rare OEM options, and instant curb appeal make it a hit as a daily driver or the offroad icon we all know and love.
