We here at Japanese Classics are no stranger to off the wall and rare vehicles, but some really stand out above the crowd. Since we have such a soft spot for S chassis, then again who doesn't, we've been searching for a superb condition Autech Silvia convertible for the past 7 years. While the S13 was offered here in the states as a soft top, they were not built by Autech, and sub-par to their Japanese counterparts. These were also an extremely limited run over in Japan. Only 600 were released to the public with a very limited number of options available, all of which came fitted with the turbocharged 1.8 liter mated to a 4 speed automatic. Due to the exceptionally high price of these, 3.25 million Yen or about $66,500 in today's dollar, they were discontinued after the inaugural run. This all OEM Silvia was finished in arguably the best color possible, Midnight Blue Pearl (TH1). The paint looks fantastic for its age, free of any clear coat peeling or blemishes. While this car only has 40K verified miles it does still have a few stone chips and light clear coat scratches that you would expect with any vehicle that has seen time on the road. Overall the paint has an incredibly rich tone and is hard to believe it is 30 years old. The non-projector "brick" headlights as they are affectionately known are in excellent condition and original to the car. The exterior of this car has remained completely stock with the exception of an aftermarket set of wheels and coilovers, which admittedly do look much nicer than the stock offerings. The top is surprisingly in great condition and there is only one sign of a previous repair which seems to have been done well and professionally. The best part about the JDM Autech Silvia convertible is how the top retracts into the body and the soft top cover that is integrated into the design which the USDM models lacked. Another nice feature of the JDM Autech model is the doors have not been modified like the USDM version which included a bulky and ugly seat belt mount integrated into the door which ruined the lines of the car with the top down. Although it can be moved easily manually, this super clean Autech Silva's powered top still functions properly which is impossible to find! In fact, the only item not functioning is the left 1/4 glass which is stuck in the up position.

The interior speaks volumes to the previous owners care. The dash is in beautiful condition and has no cracks or major sun damage. Aftermarket navigation and DVD player have been added along with an aftermarket head unit. The seats are in excellent condition and show only slight wear to the drivers bolster. Autech managed to take the already small Silvia rear seats and make them smaller. It's safe to say they would work for storage, but it's doubtful any passenger would be able to sit there for any length of time. The carpet is in excellent condition and has no staining, rips, or tears. The door panels look nearly new with virtually no signs of wear. Overall an excellent example of the Autech Silvia convertible.

As we mentioned before all the Autech Silvia's were powered by the CA18DET and were only offered in an automatic. That being said, swapping in a 5 speed transmission is a simple task and identical to its coupe counterpart. However, if you are looking for a top down weekend cruiser the automatic is a clear choice and this one is in great condition. Shifts are smooth and the transmission will hold the rev throughout the RPM range when needed. Power from the CA18DET is balanced and will get you quickly up to highway speeds. This Silvia has received 4 brand new tires and a fresh oil change, bringing maintenance up to date. Enjoy the upcoming fall season in style with this rare convertible!
