The Pajero is a capable, reliable, go-anywhere type of steed that all too often gets overlooked in the SUV market. It's tough to ignore this 1993 Mitsubishi equipped with a more sophisticated 4WD system than Toyota's of this Era, a stubbornly reliable (4D56) diesel, and room for seven. Finished in a Hannover Green Metallic (G31) the body is in good shape other than the normal dings and chips associated with normal use. At only 55K verified miles, this high roof model features a manual transmission, sunroof, and some decent creature comforts at the fraction of a price of a Hilux.

The cabin is absolutely wonderful and amongst the cleanest examples, we have seen in a while. Utilizing the aluminum running boards to help oneself aboard, the driving position allows for a superior command of the road. The low slung dash, above-average ride height, and skinny A-pillars allow for top-tier visibility. For better roadway illumination, oversized fogs are mounted on the OEM brush guard and can be clicked on with a press of a button. The steering wheel and dash are in good condition and feature an adjustable column for a bit more comfort. An off-road gauge suite sits atop the dash and displays tons of useful info for the driver. Seat comfort is surprisingly good and long cruises can be taken in comfort. A trick feature of these is the suspension driver's seat that allows for extra cushion when large potholes are encountered. The soft gray material has been cared for in a past life and is devoid of any major rips staring of tears. The headliner and door cards are tightly upholstered still and lack any major condition issues. The charcoal color carpets look like they had been protected by a set of mats, and while they are not included in the sale, the factory manuals are! While the lighter interior does make the cabin feel a bit more open than a darker one, the sunroof is key in letting some natural light in the cabin and can provide some additional ventilation. If A/C is your preference, the system blows cold and can handle the tough summer months. Manually adjustable, the front buckets can fit drivers large and small. Power amenities include a one-touch driver window, locks, and mirrors which all work as advertised. The OEM audio system is still functional, although most of our clientele will update this unit to something more US compatible. The last two rows have an abundance of headroom, cup holders, and armrests, with the ability to ferry around a total of seven occupants.

Mechanically this Pajero is just as clean as the interior is. Used for nearly three decades, the Asteron motor that powers the Mitsu makes good linear power, and seems to last forever. The 4D56 turbo-diesel is also sold in the Strada and Delica models, making parts easy to source. Ignition is easy and once the glow plugs reach proper temps, the engine is quick to turn over. The idle is constant, and the four-cylinder revs freely. Acceleration is adequate, and the five-speed manual gearbox makes the most of the power. Shifts are direct and occur without any grinding of the gears. The transfer case is selective and can be matched for highway use or rock crawling if desired. One of the more advanced features of this 4WD system is the ability to switch from 4WD to 2WD while still driving down the road. Fresh off an oil service, the 4WD SUV needn't be serviced for another three thousand miles, and also comes with a new set of expensive Falken all-terrain rubber. They grip the pavement well but can also be suited for excursions off the tarmac. The brakes are really sharp for such a big truck, and the adjustable factory suspension gives the driver tons of confidence.

The enthusiasts will tell you, there are very few real off readers nowadays. Even so, they are laden with computers, infotainment systems, and cameras. The Pajero offers old school, tried and true mechanicals and a bulletproof diesel power plant. For those who wish to take the road less traveled, this the Japanese Classic to get you there.
