Exterior Overview
To most American buyers, the Harrier nameplate is better known as the RX300. Toyota diehards and brand loyalists should breathe easy, knowing this super SUV shares its bones with the same bulletproof Lexus models that have been parading around our shores for decades. At just a hair over 101k verified miles, this Harrier 3.0 Four is a competitive bargain over our USDM offerings, and is finished in a stately Millennium Silver (1C0). Set off by OEM rainguards, this 4WD ‘yota shows well, with no major exterior differences aside from the fender mirror and badging. Save for a few chips and dings, the cosmetics are pretty dang good too! The Harrier is easy as pie to find parts for, and with its reliable V6 underpinnings, it’s no wonder why we feel comfortable adding these to our inventory of other Japanese Classics.
Interior Overview
Compared to Toyota’s other SUV offerings of the time, the Harrier was a cut above in terms of quality, comfort, and amenities. The durable gray cloth upholstery is more comfortable and has resisted any premature wear better than its leather counterparts. The dash and remaining trim is in good nick to boot, showing no unwanted cracks, fading or other pesky signs of UV damage. Both occupants up front benefit from dual SRS airbags, and the driver can tilt the steering column to their own liking as well. While other manufacturers were developing damage-prone multi function displays in the late 90’s, the factory LCD in this Harrier looks shockingly modern, and is quite intuitive to operate as well, alongside the fully functional OEM audio and digital automatic climate control. As a year-round hauler, this one would be an optimal choice thanks to readily available cold A/C and piping hot heat. As expected from a more premium SUV, power windows, locks, and power folding mirrors came standard. All three of which function as expected and make daily driving a breeze. The rear bench fits your additional passengers with ease and can also be folded completely flat should you need some extra cargo space in the rear. As further evidence this one was cared for in a prior life, the previous owner included the factory owner’s manual and even the carpeted floor mats. Overall, this well-appointed cabin is one of the brand’s best offerings we’ve seen yet, and this one is a nice place to be overall for around-town jaunts or longer road trips.
Mechanical Overview
Under the hood, Toyota’s 1MZ-FE saw much success in markets across the globe, including our own! This makes the Harrier a breeze to service, and our trained technicians have already given this one a once-over for the road ahead. Fresh off an oil and filter change, the V6 churns to life care of a new 12V battery. So that the motor runs flawlessly, one of our team replaced the mass air flow sensor and installed a new engine air cleaner. New spark plugs were installed to maximize fuel economy and performance. The 1MZ also had a valve cover gasket leak that had to be addressed. In addition to replacing it, we installed new intake gaskets and a new PCV valve for good measure. Power is fed through an automatic gearbox to both axles through a surefooted AWD system. It hustles up to highway speeds with aplomb and is a comfortable cruiser. A transmission fluid service ensures things stay that way! It also slows down impressively well, with its standard ABS brakes. New front calipers were installed, and we replaced the front rotors and pads, too. The rear pads were also coming up for a change soon, so we took care of them. Grip is handled by four new all-season tires, mounted and balanced at each corner. Freshly aligned, they will last for tens of thousands of miles to come, reduce road noise, and this five-seat SUV drives straight as an arrow. Turn key and ready to roll, this reliable ride is just barely broken in and won’t let you down!
