Toyota's N185 platform is a true 90's SUV icon. While we bought up hundreds of thousands of these lovable 4Runners here stateside, we never had one powered by a brutish and punchy 3.0L turbodiesel. This 1995 Surf is an absolute workhorse off the beaten path, but can remarkably pull double duty as a kid-toting daily driver that is refined riding over the tarmac. Finished in a classic Stellar Blue over Gray (8L7) two-tone, this rig is set off by a set of aftermarket 16" alloys, factory rainguards, an OEM rear spoiler, and a factory bashguard. Aside from some light dings, chips, and scuffs, a notable thin scratch down the passenger side this spacious five-seater is in good nick overall. Turn key and ready to roll, this Toyota is fresh off a recent service and offered with an astoundingly low 69k verified and documented miles. Versatile, efficient, and collectible, these well-rounded trucks are certified Japanese Classics, through and through. For those looking for a capable weekend warrior, all-weather commuter, or trustworthy import large enough for friends, family, and furry companions, this is it!

The cabin saw massive updates from the old model. More premium materials were utilized and a bunch of safety and convenience features were added. This SSR-X was produced with standard dual SRS airbags, for instance. The view of the road ahead is commanding, and the tall driving position offers top-notch outward visibility. Below the map light controls is a functional OEM field monitor that displays the direction of travel, along with information about the outside climate such as temperature and barometric pressure. The dashboard itself lacks any cracking or fading, and the driver can find the optimal position thanks to a standard adjustable steering column and lumbar support. Electric windows, door locks, and mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion and make daily use more enjoyable. Cold A/C is on stand-by, waiting for next year's summer, and piping hot heat for this time of year can be easily accessed through a centrally located automatic climate control system. If you prefer more natural ventilation the power retractable rear glass can drop down in conjunction with an OEM sunroof to bring in a light breeze. Hawk-eyed brand enthusiasts will note the rare tinted OEM sunroof visor with adjustable foil to fine-tune wind flow throughout the cabin. The seats are in above-average condition and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear bench is also 4-way reclinable, unlike US models, so rear passengers can catch a quick nap on a road trip in comfort. The bench folds all the way forward as well to create a flat loading floor. The seating material is mirrored the door cards which are in equally good nick. The carpets and headliner have escaped the past quarter century without sustaining any major damage, and the OEM floor mats are on hand to prevent future spills and stains. That's not to say the cabin is perfect as we did want to note the headunit has given up the ghost. On the positive side, the owner's manuals, maintenance booklets, and even a functional remote start were brought over from Japan, which the new owners will surely love.

The KZN185 has a reputation for being stoutly built and easy to service. When you open the engine bay you can see why, with plenty of room to get your hands around the compact 1KZ-TE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the four-banger churns to life care of two new 12v batteries. The 2982cc mill idles with confidence thanks to a new engine air filter and new diesel fuel filter. To keep her topped up on dinosaur juice, a new valve cover gasket has replaced the old weary one. While it was up on the lift one of our trained technicians also replaced the serpentine belts so all the accessories can be charged effectively. Mated to a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox, the driver has the ability to choose between two and four-wheel drive while behind the wheel. In 2WD, the lack of parasitic drag slightly improves acceleration and fuel economy and this mid-sizer gets up to highway speeds in a jiffy when you matte the throttle. For those hitting up a muddy trail or an outing on the beach, a center-locking differential and low-range 4WD can be deployed! While you won't be dusting any C8 Corvettes from stoplight-to-stoplight or around any twisties, we do feel that these Surfs are the best accelerating and handling SUVs in our current model portfolio. Speaking of which, the suspension was refreshed with a new set of front sway bar end links prior to this vehicle's successful state police safety inspection. Large and small bumps are gobbled up with confidence, and there is loads of ground clearance to boast about. The standard ABS brakes are happy to reel in this Hilux down from higher speeds, and for those in wintery climates, there is some added peace of mind compared to the older non-ABS equipped N130s. To complete this Hilux Surf's reconditioning we mounted and balanced four new 31" Falken tires. The new all-terrain rubber will last tens of thousands of miles to come and deliver all the grip needed, even on loose surfaces.
