Retro themed vehicles should deliver a classic aesthetic, yet deliver a modern ride and conveniences. Nissan nailed it with the Pao, and this 1990 is no exception. Finished in a brilliant Aqua Teal, a tad brighter version of the factory hue, the body is in good shape other than a few minor dings, scuffs, and chips. Offered with a mere 85K verified miles, this quirky coupe is loved for its unique styling, premium fuel economy, and spacious cabin.

The cabin carries over the retro theme and the execution is fabulous. The shallow padded dash is accented in green, and in fine shape. In combination with the copious amounts of glass used for the windscreen and the side windows, the Pao has great visibility. The seats are upholstered in a tan tweed cloth that is relatively clean and lacks and major rips, stains, or tears. They are comfortable on long cruises and match the overall aesthetic. The headliner is in nearly perfect shape and the green door plastics haven't aged too badly. The carpets have held up well over the years and draw a contrast to the white and green interior hues. The A/C works, and the simple, manual climate system pipes in hot air for use during winter as well. The audio is inoperable, but a new head unit would be a simple enough fix. On the positive side, a rare and coveted cargo cover is located in the boot, which is surprisingly large and useful.

The Pao's buttery smooth ride and efficient drivetrain make daily use a snap. The lightweight body pays dividends, and despite not having the largest engine, the Pao is peppy enough for our US roadways. The MA10S 1.0L gasoline four-cylinder benefits from an oil and filter service, so no scheduled maintenance is required for another three-thousand miles. A freshly installed 12V battery makes cold starts a snap and a new air cleaner assists in maximizing MPG and power. With a twist of the key, the four-banger fires to life and sets into a constant, steady idle and is relatively quiet. Power is fed through an automatic transmission and sent to the front wheels without any sort of urgency. The tiny two-door has enough power to accelerate up to highway speeds and merge safely. The brakes stop the Pao easily, and the steering is light and the small dimensions are perfect for parking in tight spots.

Legally imported and Virginia state safety inspected, this 1990 Pao is a turn-key JDM import. As a weekend toy, commuter car, or beachcomber it truly is a jack of all trades. Its low cost of ownership and inexpensive inception price make this a top-notch value for such a head-turning Japanese classic.
