Toyota aced the design of the third generation Hilux Surf, and as a result, we see so many still around today. This special 1996 SSR-X looks dashing, with its one-off Stellar Blue over Graphite two-tone. Adorned with factory raingaurds, and set off by a set of color-matched 16" alloys and door handles, the paint is in good nick overall aside from the normal chips and dings associated with normal use. Offered with a mere 139k verified and documented miles, this recently serviced five-seater is only barely just broken in by stateside standards. Capable, easy to maintain, and safe, this darling Toyota just needs a new owner. For those interested in one of the most timeless SUV designs ever produced, this 4x4 JDM SUV is a certified Japanese Classic.

The cabin is spacious, well-appointed, and nicely optioned. This five-seater comes standard with dual front SRS airbags and ABS for some added peace of mind behind the wheel. The dash does have a blemish from a nav unit that was unglued at some point but is otherwise fine. The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding and the tall ride height aids visibility. The seats are also supportive with the driver benefiting from adjustable lumbar support and a tilting steering column. Aside from light staining, which can also be found on the headliner and carpets, the corduroy style upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. An optional electric sunroof works as advertised which adds some ventilation and natural light to the cabin. To make daily use even more enjoyable, power windows, locks, and mirrors are all on standby and work properly! Even the rear glass powers down in case you have a canine companion. A Field monitor keeps an eye on the exterior conditions, and if they are uncomfortable an automatic climate control system can supply some assistance. The heat boils and we've recharged the A/C which blows cold at the moment. That's not to say the interior is perfect as we did want to note the headunit isn't powering on and will require replacement. Still, at a quarter-century old it's remarkable how well this truck has held up and it even includes the factory maintenance booklets for good measure!

The convenient part of ownership is that stateside 4Runners came with the same drivetrain. Powered by the 3RZ-FE four-cylinder this N185 starts right up, care of a new 12v battery and is fresh off an oil and filter service. The 2.7 liter purrs like a kitten thanks to a new set of spark plugs, wires, and distributor cap and breathes freely with its new engine air filter. To ensure the powertrain is good to go for the next owner we replaced the transmission pan gaskets, and replaced the old valve cover with a new one. Mated to a slick-shifting automatic gearbox, the Hilux manages to accelerate adequately, and sustained highway use is comfortable and stress-free. When subpar weather arrives, a surefooted 4WD system underpins this rig. A low gear setting can also be engaged if necessary, and 2WD can be chosen when efficiency is prioritized. The suspension is capable of handling the rigors of daily use and abuse as are the brakes. A new set of front pads keeps stopping distances to a minimum and the wheels are all wrapped in new Falken 31" all-terrain rubber. The new tires not only look great but will deliver tens of thousands of miles of premium year-round grip to come.
